Newfound Glory

Written by Martine Bury | Portrait by Sam Frost

Some buildings are monuments to the enlightenment and great vision of a city. Laced with sordid, flamboyant love of Tinseltown, in Los Angeles, such architectural treasures pay homage to the movies. Villa Carlotta, a historic 1926 grande dame of Hollywood apartment buildings, exemplifies this. Build for luxurious living and secret escapades, it features details like soundproof walls and suites side to fit grand pianos. In true Hollywood style, it was also rumored to be a guild gift of William Randolph Hearst to Elinor Ince, the wife of a studio mogul who mysteriously died on Hearst’s yacht - allegedly related to a love triangle involving actress Marion Davies. After years of deterioration, the Churrigueresque abode has now been restored to its former splendor.
